“I’ll be down the makeup aisle”. Ah, just a few of my favourite words :). Some people believe great makeup is expensive. I disagree. Some of the best makeup products I repurchase time again are from the drugstore. It also makes buying groceries a whole lot better!
Last week I posted about bold colours on the eyes and all the products used were considered “high-end”. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Sephora goodies but I’m a huge drugstore makeup junkie and I wanted to share my current favs!
Here are 5 items you should pick up at the drugstore if you haven’t yet!
These are definitely a few of my drugstore beauty staples! Below are my affiliate links.
Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Foundation. I’ve tried out a ton of foundations and many were from the drugstore. I’m always on the hunt for makeup from the drugstore that act like high end products (I’m talking great coverage, long lasting, feel/look good) for a fraction of the cost. This one is it! It makes my skin look flawless and natural but with awesome coverage. I’ve come across a few awesome drugstore foundations I could post another time but my current favourite is Maybelline Superstay Better Skin. It’s all I’ve been wearing the past few months! They have a great selection of shades and for my fellow yellow undertone beauties, they have a good amount of shades to fill this hard to find gap. I use shade 30 Warm Nude with a Crown foundation brush, my favourite for fast, full coverage, or a Beauty Blender for lighter application. My skin type is normal-dry so if you’re somewhat like me, try this out!
L’Oreal Paris True Match Crayon Concealer. This concealer has been my tried and tested concealer since 1999. Ok, not that long but that’s how long it feels like. Am I the only one who uses that phrase when referring to something really ancient? This item has been a part of my collection for as long as I can remember and I’ve gone through many. My most used shade from the collection is W4-5 but I have also used W1-2-3 (mixing/highlighting) and W6-7-9 (contouring) as well. It comes in a fat, creamy pencil form and I use it on a small synthetic smudge brush, here, or straight from the tube. I find I mostly use it as a spot concealer. Spot concealing is a process of covering blemishes and dark spots by targeting those specific areas. You’ll have to find a shade closest to your skin tone to do so. The True Match is a thicker formula so it’s not something you’ll want to use under your eyes –nobody wants a cakey face. Spot conceal, set with powder and it will stay in place all day long.
Kiss Ever Ez False Lashes. I’m a false lash fanatic! I love the way they amp up any makeup look, even for the everyday. I’ve used and still use plenty of high end mink lashes (up to $50 a pair) and although they’re excellent, I seem to only reach for them on formal/party nights. These KISS babies are all I’ve been gravitating towards for the simple and fresh makeup looks. I have skimpy, thin, natural eyelashes and these falsies make them look like I have a full set of fluffy lashes without looking obviously fake. A lot has to do with the thin, clear band and the mixture of long and short lashes along it. They’re reusable and last (surprisingly) a very long time! I’ve gotten so much wear out of these as they don’t shed like mink lashes. The best part? They come in a pack of 5. Yes, 5! You can get them for as low as $10 for the set. What a deal. They’re worth giving a try. My favourite eyelash glues to use with these are the Revlon and House of Lashes.
L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lip Balm. If you’ve read my post on my DIY lip balm, you’ll know I always have this tinted balm in several handbags and on my vanity. It is life! They will keep my lips hydrated ALL day and I never thought a balm like this would do that. I use the shade Plush Plum 219 and I find it’s the perfect shade without giving my lips too much colour. I can wear it alone or on top of a lipstick (especially a drying liquid lipstick) without altering the shade. There are 8 wearable shades in the collection and it claims to provide 8 hours of continuous hydration – soft and more supple lips even after it’s been removed. The claims hold true and I’m pretty surprised since I bought these a few years back while impulse shopping (don’t judge). I’ve been hooked ever since. It also smells amazing.. like cotton candy/vanilla heaven.
Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Mascara. I talked about my love for false eyelashes but I don’t always wear them. Lately, I’ve been gravitating towards this mascara in Blackest Black on the days I don’t wear lashes. Since my real lashes are so measly, I have to give them a good curl and two coats of waterproof mascara. It does a great job in coating, separating, and volumizing my baby lashes without flaking and smudging all over my face. It has a curved applicator wand that is actually quite nice at getting right into the inner corners of the eyes. I also find it works much better after some time, two weeks later, when the formula dries a bit. It sounds weird but I feel this way about all my mascaras. It becomes less “wet” and coats a bit thicker and holds the curl much longer. This mascara is the newest to my collection, but another one I have always loved is Lash Blast by Maybelline. Both are worth giving a try.
